Beacon Powers AI Pilots at Georgia DOT

Georgia DOT is using Beacon to pilot AI for faster cost estimates and real-time traffic response—turning complex workflows into practical results.

Beacon Software Kicks Off AI Pilots with Georgia DOT to Improve Multiple DOT Functions

ATLANTA, Georgia, August 25, 2025 – Beacon Software has launched two artificial intelligence (AI) pilots with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), aimed at modernizing key elements of engineering design, traffic operations, and the workflows that power them at scale. These pilots show how agencies can move from AI theory to practical results today.

"The Beacon pilots reflect our commitment to using technology where it matters most—serving the people of Georgia," said John Hibbard, Deputy Chief Engineer for GDOT. "AI isn't a buzzword for us; we're looking at it as a way to plan better, respond better, and improve safety and mobility statewide."

"AI isn't just a buzzword for us; we're looking at it as a way to plan better, respond better, and improve safety and mobility statewide." - John Hibbard, Deputy Chief Engineer for GDOT

Transportation agencies nationwide face the same challenges: making roads safer, easing congestion, and getting more value from every infrastructure dollar. With technology advancing so quickly, the agencies that learn by doing will define the future of mobility—and GDOT’s pilots are proving what that looks like in practice."GDOT is proving what’s possible with AI in transportation,” said Jim Anderson, CEO of Beacon Software. “By moving fast and focusing on tangible impact, they’re showing the DOTs around the country what’s possible today.”

The pilots—Engineering Estimation and TMC‑React—cover the spectrum of GDOT’s work, from long-range project planning and design, to real‑time incident response. They signal a decisive shift from evaluation to execution, with tangible outcomes.

Engineering Estimation, now in pilot, uses generative AI to help engineers create cost estimates in a fraction of the time previously required, by analyzing historical data and project variables—accelerating planning and resource allocation across Georgia’s transportation network.

Already live at GDOT's Traffic Management Center, TMC-React distills complex standard operating procedures (SOPs) and contact lists into clear, real‑time checklists that can be used during incident response, helping operators act faster and with greater confidence when minutes count.

"AI will eventually touch every part of a DOT’s operations,” said Jim Anderson, CEO of Beacon Software. “But the impact comes from solving the right problem at the right time. That’s why we’re launching targeted pilots across critical functions, showing DOT teams clear value across safety, efficiency, and decision speed.”
